About

I bought my first house in the Lowcountry after years of renting in cities on the other side of the country. Nobody warns you what humidity, salt air, and close to fifty inches of rain a year actually do to a house.

Within the first year my siding had a green film I couldn't explain, my roof started streaking black, and every contractor I called had a different opinion about what I needed and why. I started digging into the actual chemistry and methods behind exterior cleaning, mostly so I could ask better questions before hiring anyone.

This site is what I wish existed when I started: plain explanations of what's happening to a Lowcountry home's exterior and why it happens here more than most places. I'm not a softwash contractor myself. I connect homeowners with vetted local pros and write about what I learn along the way.
